Types of Paddle Boards (SUPs)

Stand up paddle boards come in all shapes and sizes. The most common type of paddle board is a hard paddle board. Traditionally this is an epoxy paddle board or an EMS foam core board wrapped in fiberglass with one or more fins.  Fins help the board track in the water.

Inflatable paddle boards started around 2014. They are super popular today. Inflatable SUPs provide many benefits that epoxy paddle boards do not and make stand up paddle boards.  however, there are benefits to both types of paddle boards. Stand up paddle board are thicker than your typical surfboard. Paddle boards can range from 8 to 12 feet in length, 28 to 32 inches wide, and 4 to 5 inches thick.

Wider, longer and thicker paddle boards are good options for beginners. They offer the best stability when learning the SUP basics on a flat body of water. After you gain some experience, then you can progress to a smaller paddle board. The most common stand up paddle board shape for beginners is an All-Around board. There are a several different shapes and of paddle boards to choose from.

All Around Stand Up Paddle Boards (SUPs)

Inflatable SUPs

  • Inflatable paddle boards are the easiest to store because they roll up and are typically stored in a large backpack
  • Inflatable SUPs are great for traveling because it can easily fit inside any car
  • They are very durable. Dropping them will not damage them
  • Good all around SUP for beginners

Fishing SUPs (Stand Up Paddle Boards)

  • Have a wide deck pad for lots of space on your SUP for your fishing gear like coolers, etc
  • Some include attachments like fishing rod holders, bait trays, etc.
  • There are many benefits of fishing from a paddle board versus fishing from land, kayak and boat
  • Make good paddle boards for beginners

  • Touring boards are typically longer and less wide with a pointed nose.

Surfing Paddle Boards

  • Designed for surfing ocean waves.
  • Surfing SUPs are made to be maneuverable and responsive in the surf.
  • Tend to be  less stable on the water.
  • Not a good SUP for beginners.
